Shark Tank is a series of paintings meant to address the predatory behavior towards women on college campuses, especially in party settings. Even though many sexual assaults go unreported, Bucknell still has an abnormally high rate of sexual crimes occurring on campus, with around 1 in 3 women on campus experiencing sexual assault or attempted sexual assault. As someone who has both experienced these crimes firsthand and heard many similar stories from other women on campus, I want to start a conversation on this campus about how women have to put themselves into dangerous situations to socialize due to predatory behavior from men. The women in my paintings are seen swimming with sharks, as sharks make the perfect symbol to visualize the threats surrounding women while in nightlife settings, oftentimes without them realizing it. The large scale of the paintings, along with the blue mood created in the gallery, is meant to fully immerse the viewer in the “shark tank” in order to evoke the same overwhelming feelings in the viewer as the women in the paintings.
